SOCIAL MEDIA: SOMEONE, SOMEWHERE IS OFFENDED

CHRIS ROMO

THINK BEFORE POSTING

  • For better or worse, you're broadcasting yourself to the world
  • What's humorous to you, may be offensive to others
  • Professionals can lose their jobs over offensive posts

"A HARMLESS JOKE"

  • Akron, Ohio middle school math teacher Melissa Cairns learned the hard way
  • Posted a picture on Facebook of her students with duct tape covering their mouths
  • The caption read "Finally found a way to keep them quite!"
  • Claimed students were not asked to put tape on their mouths

Untitled Slide

  • Insisted students ability to joke with her helped them learn
  • When not teaching, she speaks out against domestic violence
  • Organizes marathon race "On My Own Two Feet" which benefits women's shelters
  • She dismissed all claims of "harming" the students with the tape

SHE STILL GOT FIRED

"SHOWED A LACK OF GOOD JUDGEMENT, HER CONDUCT WAS UNBECOMING OF A TEACHER"

HOW COULD SHE HAVE AVOIDED THIS?

  • Separate business and Facebook
  • Think twice before anything you post
  • Avoid social media all together
  • Be professional at all times
