Setting:

Cook Coffeehouse

COOK COFFEEHOUSE

  • This setting is loud in the day when customers are there smoking pipes, drinking coffee, and talking to each other.
  • It is also the household of the Cook family. The family lives in the upstairs portion of the coffeehouse.

Setting:
Bush Hill

BUSH HILL

  • Bush Hill was a mansion turned into a hospital to house those who had the yellow fever.
  • The sick slept in hospital beds lining the walls of rooms in the mansion.
  • There were nurses who bathed, clothed, and fed the sick.
  • There were rumors of the mansion housing dangerous criminals before the epidemic. Most people would avoid this place, but the sick had nowhere else to go.
  • Stephan Gerard organized medical care and helped tend patients.

Setting:
Ogilvie Mansion

OGILVIE MANSION

  • The Ogilvie mansion was a large estate owned by the Ogilvie family.
  • The mansion was built by Robert Ogilvie.
  • The Ogilvie family was very rich and high in their social status.
  • Because the family has so much money, the house was huge drawing room.

CHARACTERS

Matilda Cook

MATILDA COOK

  • Matilda,or Maddie, thinks of herself as a child even though she has reached the age where girls like her are finding suitors.
  • She thinks she is weak and not strong enough to endure her family's struggle for survival.
  • She wishes everything was back to normal, that the fever passed and everyone was well.

Lucille Cook

LUCILLE COOK

  • Lucille is the mother of Matilda cook.
  • She has grown to be a bitter woman since her husband died, leaving her to live her life as a widow.
  • She runs the coffee house which is a proud reminder of her husband.
  • She keeps a well trained eye on her daughter Matilda and doesn't let her do very much without her own consent.

Eliza

ELIZA

  • Eliza is a cook and waitress at the coffee house.
  • She is part of the Free African Society and helps with the fever victims.
  • She is strong-willed and compassionate.
  • She believes in the powers of God and thinks His virtues are what is best for everyone.

Polly

POLLY

  • Polly was Matilda's friend.
  • She had a job at the coffeehouse.
  • She died of yellow fever.
