The Salem Witch Trials
The infamous Salem witch trials began during the spring of 1692, after a group of young girls in Salem Village, Massachusetts, claimed to be possessed by the devil and accused several local women of witchcraft. As a wave of hysteria spread throughout colonial Massachusetts, a special court convened in Salem to hear the cases;

ABIGAIL HOBBS

  • she was examined 4 times: April 19 &20, May 12, & June 29
  • She was 14 years old when she was arrested on April 18, 1692
  • She accused many others of witchcraft while in examinations
  • She accused John & Sarah Proctor, Tituba, etc.

APRIL 19 EXAMINATION

  • at Salem Village, 19 April, 1692, by John Hawthorn and Jonath.
  • admitted she saw the devil and "many creatures"
  • saw the devil once at the Eastward at Casko-bay, 3 years ago.
  • said that the Devil will give her fine items if she became a witch
  • men wanted her to kill Mercy Lewes & Ann Putman

-cat, men, & Sarah Good, a witch, wanted her to mark the Devil's book & join him in hurting people
-she tortured and killed neighbors by sticking pins in poppets, and ate red bread and red wine at the witches' sabbat.

  • She was then sentenced to execution
  • in 1693, her trials collapsed & she was never executed
  • Governor signed a reprieve & Abigail was spared the hangman's noose
