The team name and logo have been the subject of controversy. Lawsuits have been filed by Native American groups who considered the team name and logo disparaging. However, recent polls have shown a lack of major support among Americans for a name change.[9][10] On June 18, 2014, the Trademark Trial and Appeal Board (TTAB) of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) voted to cancel the six Redskins trademarks in a 2-to-1 vote. The name was called "disparaging to Native Americans" by the patent office.[11][12] Section 2(a) of the Lanham Act prohibits the registration of any mark if they are "disparaging, scandalous, contemptuous, or disreputable."[13] On July 8, 2015, Judge Gerald Bruce Lee of the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Virginia upheld the TTAB decision, ordering the USPTO to cancel the Redskins' federal trademarks.[14][15]
