Dogs are trained to run for a long time in cold weather. Siberian Huskies, Alaskan huskies and Malamutes are some of the dogs that run the Iditarod.

Dogs wear coats to stay warm, boots to protect their paws, and are examined by a vet many times during the race.

The person driving the dogsled is called the musher. Mushers can be boys or girls. Susan Butcher is a famous Iditarod musher. She won the race 4 times.
