Ideology in media

What I will cover

  • What ideology in media is and its origins
  • Ideology in mainstream music
  • Ideology in TV/Movies/Video Games
  • Victims and effects
  • Solutions

Ideology in Media is defined here as a system of ideals and values perpetuated through media.

The Issue

Origins

-Sex sells
-Violence sells
-White males mostly control the media

Music

Partying obsession

Songs which involve sex/partying

Jason Derulo - Talk Dirty

Been around the world
Don't speak the language
But your booty don't need explaining
All I really need to understand is
When you talk dirty to me

TV/Movies/Video games

Racism and sexism

The Internship

Characters Whose Appearance was Commented on in movies

60 girls ages six to nine were shown one doll wearing revealing, “sexy” clothing and another doll wearing trendy, but more modest, loose-fitting clothing. Girls across the board wanted to look like the sexy doll.

Blacks are frequently being portrayed as either subservient, evil, or are over sexualized.

Victims

Society

Self-objectification

Internalized Oppression

In a survey of girls 9 and 10 years old, 40% have tried to lose weight, according to an ongoing study funded by the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute.

Following the introduction of TV into Fiji, a sharp rise in eating disorders among young girls was observed, Harvard Medical School researchers report.

In 1992, the American Psychological Association's Task Force on Television and Society published a report that confirms the link between TV violence and aggression.

Another study shows that teens that had been exposed to a highly sexual TV drama rated descriptions of casual sex encounters less negatively than teens that had received no sexual content exposure

Frequent exposure to media images that sexualize girls and women affects how girls conceptualize femininity and sexuality. Girls and young women who more frequently consume or engage with mainstream media content offer stronger endorsement of sexual stereotypes that depict women as sexual objects

In summary, Media asserts that:

  • You should have sex with anyone that you find attractive
  • Partying constantly is a fulfilling lifestyle
  • Beauty = Goodness
  • Men do, Women are
  • Black people are inferior

Yet, media also asserts that

  • Greed is not fulfilling
  • Homosexuals should not be discriminated against
  • Bullying should not be tolerated

How ideology in media can be changed

-create and support media with positive ideology
-having more women and minorities creating media
-educating others to be conscious about the messages they convey in their work
