GHOULISH SONG

William Alexander was born October 9,1976. He studied theater and folklore at Oberlin college and English at the university of Vermont. He lives currently,writes and teaches in Minneapolis,Minnesota. Some of his books include Weird Tales,Lady Churchill's Rosebud wristlet,inter-fictions 2,and fantasy. He has also won the National Book Awards.

GENRE

Kaile is the main character. She is very polite to strangers. When she was given the flute she got to learn what shade her shadow did and did't like,and how shade needed light or she would go away forever.

Shade is the shadow of kaile. She is a really nice shadow,but in order for her to be seen she needs light at all times. Shade does not talk much she usually talks to kaile.

Luce and Cymbat are sailors that save kaile and shade when they are lost on the kneecap. They also are musicians that are helping keep the floods back.

Mother is a strict person. She often takes control over the family. She also is a grate backer that wants every thing to be precise. Does not say her real name.

Father is a person that will fallow any order given to him by his wife(mother). It does not say his really name.

Snot fish is kaile's brother. His real name is cod and his nickname is Snot fish. Cod wants to be a guard when he gets older because he wants to be able to blow a whistle and scream"INCEPTION DAY!"

Dr.Boggs's is the doctor that try's to help kaile and her family find out why she is dead. He is not the brightest bulb in the bunch. He did not go through all of the years of medical school,he had dropped out.

Fidalm is the wood carver. He owns his own barge. When kaile was on the boat she noticed little wind-up charms hanging from the rail,there seem to have been thousands of them. These charms where made to keep the dead away from haunting.

The majority of the setting is in Zombay their town. Then there is Kneecap island that is just across the river. The Begicane is where kaile auditions. Kaile's family lives on the south side of Zombay,but when kaile and shade head off on their own they are going to the north side of Zombay where they find an amazing place the front gates are made of bones.

Internal conflict is that kaile was disconnected from her shadow and is trying to get it reconnected. External conflict is that the floods are coming soon and the musicians have to stop the floods by playing their music,but they do not have enough musicians.

PLOT

• The goblin is placing a cures on kalies dad.
• Kalies mom does not pass inspection day.
• Kalie loses her shadow.
• People ignore kalie because she has the markings of the dead.
• Kalie and Shade have to find lamp oil because Shade has to stay in the light.

PLOT

• Kaile and shade get stuck on kneecap island.
• A monster made from the bones of the drowned came.
• Luce and Cymbat came and rescued Kaile and Shade
• Kaile auditions for a place that her gradfather was before he died.
• Kaile and Shade travel to the north side of Zombay and meet the reliquarian.

• The floods are coming and there are not enough people.
• Kaile and shad meets the shadow of the dead girl Iren.

My favorite part is when Shade tells Kaile how she does not like it when she gets dragged through the puddles on rainy days or how she despises when people steep on her.

RATING

I recommended this book to people who like suspense.

The theme is,"you can say with music what you can't say otherwise. You can understand with music what can't ever fit into words. And you can shape music to reshape the world."
