PRESENTATION OUTLINE

ROAD TO REVOLUTION

JD CHANDLER

STAMP ACT

  • King George III sent George Grenvile, a financial expert, to America.
  • Grenville establishes many new acts, such as:
  • the Sugar Act, Currency Act, and Quartering Act.
  • The Stamp Act is the one that really angers the colonists.
  • The Stamp Act requires stamps to be put on most printed materials.

NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION

  • This was the first tax Great Britain put on the colonists
  • The Virginia House of Burgesses passed a series of resolutions
  • They said they could not be taxed without a representative
  • AKA, no taxation without representation!

THE SONS OF LIBERTY

  • They burned houses, intimidated stamp distributors, and destroyed businesses.
  • This is the first real act of rebellion amongst the colonists
  • This led them farther from Great Britain, and more towards independance

REASON 2

  • In 1773, Parliament passed the Tea Act
  • This allowed the East India Company to sell tea at lower prices than Dutch Tea
  • They could sell sell directly to the shopkeepers, skipping American merchants
  • The colonists feared this was GB first step to run them out of business

COLONISTS' REACTION

  • On October of 1773, The East India company shipped 1,253 chests of tea
  • to Boston, New York, Charles Town, and Philadelphia
  • Committee of Correspondence said tea would not be allowed to land.
  • Charles Town agents stole tea and hid it in warehouses

BOSTON TEA PARTY

  • In Boston Harbor, 150 men boarded the ships the nught before the tea was supposed to land
  • They dumped over 342 chests into the harbor, while thousands of colonists watched from shore
  • There was so much tea that the water turned brown
  • GB was so mad they made more laws intended to punish the colonists.
  • This only enraged the colonists even more

We hold these Truths to be self evident that all Men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty, and the Pursuit of Happiness (Declaration of Independence).

DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

  • This quote is saying all (white landowning) men are created equal
  • But GB was not treating the colonists equally.. With all the taxes and laws
  • The colonists feel that they do not have liberty, they feel as though GB isn't letting them

WHY SPANISH COLONIZATION IS NOT PART OF THE AMERICAN ID

  • A German geographer labeled current South America “America”
  • To honor Amerigo Vespucci, a Florentine explorer
  • The Spanish crown labeled the continents as Las Indias (The Indies)
  • set out to create an empire for Spain.

Cabeza de Vaca joined an expedition to Spanish North America (South America)... Only Cabeza de Vaca and three other men survived the journey... Cabeza de Vaca survived by adapting to his surroundings.. For six years. The king rewarded him by appointing him governor of a South American colony (De Vaca 68).
