DOMESTIC VIOLENCE

DEFINITION

• Violent or aggressive behavior within the home, typically involving
• The violent abuse of a spouse, partner or parent
• Domestic violence is when a partner or parent uses various forms and patterens of behavior
• To gain dominance over their partner
• Domestic violence includes battering, family abuse, relationship abuse, and many more

EXAMPLES

• Keeping a partner from contacting family or friends
• Name calling or put downs
• Withholding money
• Stopping a partner from getting or keeping a job
• Sexual assault

STATISTICS FOR WOMEN

• 1in 4 women will experience domestic violence in a lifetime
• More than 4 million women experience physical assault or rape by their partner
• 1/3 of all homocide victims are women who are murdered by a previous partner
• Women who are between the ages 20-24 are at the highest risk for domestic violence

STATISICS FOR MEN

• There are roughly 3 million physical assaults in which men are the victim
• One out of fourteen men has been physically assaulted by a current or former spouse
• It is estimated that 835,000 men are physically assaulted by an intimate partner annually
• 56% of adult men who reported being physically assaulted were assaulted by a 3 stranger

STATISICS FOR CHILDREN

• More than 60% of domestic violence happens at home
• More than 3 million chileen have seen domestic violence in their home
• Children who live in homes that experience this biolence also are more likely
• To suffer from neglect or abuse at high rates (30-60%)
• Child abuse is a type of domestic violence

• Children are more likely to interfer when they are the witness to parental violence
• This makes the child more vulnerable to injury and can cause death
• More than 70% of children who die of abuse are under the age of 3
• Most child victims of abuse or neglect suffer at the hands of someone they know
