WHAT IS A DESERT?

A desert is any area that receives very little precipitation.

SUBTROPICAL DESERT

  • Caused by the circulation patterns of air masses
  • Fairly warm
  • Average temperatures above 50 degrees Fahrenheit

  • Caused by cold ocean currents
  • May be almost completely rainless
  • High humidity
  • Damp with fog
  • Some can go decades without rainfall
  • 25-95 degrees Fahrenheit

  • Caused by mountain ranges blocking all rainy weather
  • Warm and dry
  • 28-86 degrees Fahrenheit

  • Water is frozen
  • Very little available for plants and animals
  • 50 degrees Fahrenheit
