HISTORY

  • Indigenous Basque people
  • Romans took over in 1st century B.C.
  • Basques rebelled against Frankish empire in 824
  • Formerly called Nevarre
  • Conquered by Crown of Castile in 1512 and became part of the unified Kingdom of Spain permanently in 1524

  • The Basque national party formed an autonomous government during the Spanish Civil War
