PRESENTATION OUTLINE

CONCEPTION

Prenatal Development & The Newborn

Male germ cell= sperm
Female germ cell= ovum(egg)

Conception is the Union of the ovum and sperm cells.

PROCESS OF CONCEPTION

  • Conception ovum and sperm combine to form single cell called the zygote (fertilized egg)
  • Ovum are produced/stored by the woman's ovaries

~Ovulation is the release of an ovum
~When the egg is released, it travels towards the fallopian tubes

The fallopian tubes extend to the sides of the uterus
The uterus is the organ which the baby develops and is protected until birth
When an egg is released, hormones help the fallopian tube to gather the egg.

FUN FACTS

  • Semen includes over a hundred million sperm
  • Many sperm do not survive
  • Conception usually happens when the ovum is less than 1/3 of the way down the fallopian tube
  • Only one sperm successfully enters

Genetic factors:
-Genetics is the study of heredity.
-A persons inherited traits are passed through him or her at conception.
-Genetic factors are the traits passed through the genes

Untitled Slide

  • During the parental period, genetic blueprint also gives cells instructions for family like traits that will undo of throughout life
  • Ex. Baby boy cells receive insurrections wether he will be bald later in life

WHAT CAUSES EACH PERSON TO BE DIFFERENT?

-Genetic code is stored DNA
-DNA is a chemical compound that is found in thread-like structures called chromosomes
-Chromosomes carry genes and living cells and contain information needed in a human

-Each human baby receives 46 chromosomes which equal 23 pairs
-Half are from your mother and half are from your father
-Each chromosome contains about 20,000 genes

GENES DETERMINE...

DOMINANT & RECESSIVE TRAITS

  • People can pass on traits that don't show up in them
  • Dominant Traits are those that always show in a person even if one gene of the pair is inherited for that trait
  • Recessive Traits typically do not show in a person unless both genes from that trait are inherited

-It takes two recessive genes for recessive trait to show
-A person who inherits only one recessive gene for a trait becomes a carrier which may show up in later generations

-People have both the dominator and recessive genes for height
-Tallness=dominant
-Shortness= recessive

SEX CHROMOSOMES

Untitled Slide

  • All the mothers eggs cells will carry the X chromosome
  • Males sperm can contain X or Y chromosome
  • Therefore the males sex chromosome ALWAYS determines the sex of the child
