THE FOUNDERS OF NEW YORK

  • The New York colony was originally called new netherland.
  • When the english took new amsterdam, the dutch quickly surrendered
  • King Charles II gave the city to his brother, the duke of york, who renamed it New York.

REASONS FOR FOUNDING NEW YORK

  • King Charles II gave the city to his brother for money.
  • The duke of york, wanted the riches and resourses their.
  • The colony had tons of wood and a great harbor.

PEOPLE THAT SETTLED IN THE COLONIES

  • Some dutch that were still at New York still lived there.
  • The english also brought in some englishmen to settle there.
  • They english also brought over slaves to do the very hard work.

  • It was usually hot and humid during the summer time.
  • Althought is was hot and humid it snowed during the winter.
  • The colony was on a plainy area next to a river with mountains in the distance

  • The settlers were in the business of fur, slave, and lumber trade.
  • There was a lot of area to farm crops like corn and flax.
  • The colony of New York also made ships, clocks, and even fished.

  • In the colony of New York people had the freedom of religion.
  • Although people could worship anyone, most people were protestant.
  • Although this segregated people who weren't protestant like catholic and jewish people.

POLITICS IN NEW YORK

  • New York was run by a governor who was appointed by the king.
  • Sometimes the colonists would gain the freedom to elect the mayor or something like that.
  • When New York adopted its first constitution in 1777, it had to changed several times within the years.
