HISTORY AND BACKGROUND OF CAREER

  • Cardio surgery has been a relevant profession in the U.S because many people in America have serious heart conditions and can be fixed with surgery.
  • It was originated by Daniel Hale Williams was the first man open heart surgery in 1893
  • During World War II was when heart surgery became a big profession to help save a majority of U.S. Soldiers

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE CAREER

  • Education: a bachelor in pre-medicine training: shadowing a doctor at a hospital
  • Colleges: Colombia university,Duke University, and Harvard.
  • Related jobs: nurse, neurosurgeon, and general surgeon
  • Personality/skills: communication skills, friendly and passionate, and filling out medical charts.

OBTAING A CAREER

  • Opportunities: shadowing a doctor or surgeon in college/ high school diploma
  • Best route: take required science classes in high school and college and AP classes

JOB DESCRIPTION

  • Daily duties: to make sure the patient is prepared for surgery and knows all of the possibility of what can happen during the surgery.
  • Big picture: cardiothoracic surgeons are to make sure that your heart, lungs, and esophagus are all in working condition and to fix them if not.

  • Work hours: 12 hour shifts but are on call for 24 in case of emergency.
  • Salary the average salary is a little over 500,000 a year.
  • Dress code: scrubs are mandatory so that things don't get on your cloth during the work day

JOB REFLECTION

  • Challenges: there is a lot of school which Is expensive, on call 24/7, extremely stressful because someone's life is literally in your hands.
  • Economic downturns: there are not many people in this field you have to be very good to be apart of cardiothorcic
