PHAR LAP

Phar Lap was born on the 4th of October 1926 and sadly passed away on the 5th of April 1932, due to sudden and mysterious illness.

In the four year racing career, Phar Lap won 37 of the 51 races he entered, including the Melbourne Cup!

Phar Lap was a champion thoroughbred racehorse whose achievements captured the publics imagination during the early years of the Great Depression.

Foaled in New Zealand, he was trained and raced in Australia with his jockey, Harry Telford

Phar Lap was so significant to Australia because when everyone was in doubt, he rose up and became a superstar! He gave everyone hope when they were all hopeless.

  • 1926: Born IN NEW ZEALAND
  • 1927: Started training
  • 1928: He got registered as a racehorse
  • 1929: Won his first race
  • 1930: He won derby day and also was a target for shooters
  • 1930: Also won the Melbourne Cup
  • 1932: Won his best race
  • 1932: Also passed away and had his heart stuffed in the museum.
