HOMELESSNESS

In high school I was asked to write an essay on homelessness. I was told to rewrite it because I did not define homelessness. In English, we have to explain the obvious.

Untitled Slide

English speakers begin learning to explain and define the obvious as children. Think “why is the sky blue” type questions or “Hey Papa, today we learned about homelessness.” At the high context dinner table, a child might be told to shut up and eat. While at the low-context table, a child might be asked what homelessness is although it’s obvious to everyone. These different upbringings can have tremendous effects on academic performance.
