Constitutional Convention

The Constitutional Convention was when delegates from all the states gathered together to revise the Articles of Confederation and to make the Constitution

Great Compromise

  • The larger states wanted the Virginia Plan
  • The smaller states wanted the New Jersey Plan
  • Rodger Sherman came up with the idea of the compromise
  • Senate takes two representatives from each state
  • House representatives are based on population

3/5 Compromise

  • The slaves weren't counted as people during taxes
  • South wanted them to be counted as people to get representatives
  • They wanted more representatives to get more voice in the house
  • The agreement was that 5 slaves would be counted as 3 people
  • the people were counted by a census that took place every 10 years

Checks and Balances

  • There are 3 branches or government
  • They make sure that no single branch gets too much power
  • the branches are Legislative, Executive and Judicial
  • The president is in executive and congress is in legislative
  • The judicial branch has all the courts in it

Electoral College

  • 2 senators+amount of representatives=electors
  • electors vote and the most votes win the state vote
  • the people might vote for one person but the other might win
  • without this it would be prone to error

7 Principles of the Constitution

  • Popular Sovereignty is people can be trusted to make good decisions
  • Federalism is sharing powers between state and federal government
  • Republicanism is voting for what will be best for the people
  • Separation of Powers ensures that no one group gets too much power
  • Checks and Balances makes sure none of the branches gets too much power

7 Principles of the Constitution

  • Limited Government is government officials are not above the law
  • Individual rights are the basic rights every human should have
  • The seven principles help set the guidelines for a successful country

Ratification
Ratification is the signing or agreement.
Federalists are people who support the constitution and Anti-federalists are people who opposed the constitution
