CONNEcTICUT

A New England Colony

Thomas Hooker didn't like living in Massachusetts. He set out to find better land.

Thomas gathered some followers to take to the new land. It took them 2 weeks to reach Connecticut Valley.

They finally arrived and called the community Hartford. They joined with other settlements to form Connecticut.

Hooker believed in the free consent of people so he wrote a document called the Fundamental Orders.

King Charles then officially authorized it and granted a charter which gave colonists more rights.

Someone later stole the charter and hid it in a huge white oak tree. The "Charter Oak" became a sign of Connecticut's freedom.
