FOUNDER: THOMAS HOOKER ( 1586-1647)

  • PURITAN CLERGYMAN THAT CAME/LIVED IN BOSTON IN 1633 that served as a pastor at the 8th church
  • Didn't agree with the laws and regulations of Massachusetts, of men not being able to vote without owning land
  • Convinced 100 people including his family to move to the fertile valleyalong the western river, took 2 weeks
  • Formed Connecticut in 1639 with 4 different other settlements that was there before them

REASONS FOR SETTLEMENTS/ SETTLERS

  • Founded in 1558 by John Calvin
  • Were a group of protestants in 16th and 17th centuries
  • Seeking new settlements
  • Women wore coifs, shifts, a waistcoat, aprons, and petticoats and shoes
  • Men wore ruffs, doublet, cuffs, breeches, garters, and stockings and shoes

Soon after the written constitution was made, other puritans broke off and made a new settlement called New Haven. Went under the 'the word of GOD'. So these two settlements going head to head on what the gov. She be KING CHARLES THE II authorized them to co-exists which gave them more rights.

There was a legend, that claimed that when KING JAMES II sent governor Andros to Hartford 15 years later to take bake the charter someone stole it and then hid the charter inside of the trunk of a big white oak tree. Which then became the symbol of Connecticut's freedom.
