CUNJUNCTIVITIS

INFLAMMATION OF THE CONJUNCTIVA, ALSO KNOWN AS PINK EYE

CAUSES

  • Viruses
  • Bacteria (gonorrhea or chlamydia)
  • Irritants such as shampoo, smoke, dirt, and pool chlorine
  • Allergies: dust, pollen, and allergies that only affect people who wear contacts

SYMPTOMS

  • Redness in the white of the eye or inner eyelid and burning eyes
  • Increased tear production, itchy eyes
  • Thick yellow discharge the crust over often happens after sleep
  • White discharge from the eye
  • Increased sensitivity to light

TREATMENT

  • Bacteria: Antibiotics in the form of eye drops, ointments, pills
  • Viruses: it has to run its course usually from 4-7 days (highly contagious)
  • Irritants: wash substance from the eyes for 5 minutes
  • Allergies: get the allergy treated and the allergen removed
