WHAT IS CONGESTIVE HEART FAILURE?

  • When the heart doesn't pump blood efficiently
  • Blood circulates through the body slower
  • Pressure in the heart increases
  • Heart can't pump enough oxygen and nutrients to meet body's needs

CAUSES

  • Coronary artery disease
  • Heart attack
  • Cardiomyopathy
  • Conditions overworking the heart

  • High blood pressure
  • Valve, thyroid, kidney disease
  • Diabetes
  • Heart defects at birth
  • Several conditions at once

SYMPTOMS

  • Congested lungs
  • Fluid/water retention
  • Dizziness, fatigue,weakness
  • Rapid or irregular heartbeats

TYPES OF HEART FAILURE

  • Systolic dysfunction
  • Diastolic dysfunction

DIAGNOSIS

  • Blood test
  • B-type Natriuretic Peptide (BNP) blood test
  • Chest x-Ray
  • Echocardiogram, electrocardiogram
  • Stress test

TREATMENT

  • Tight control of meds and lifestyle
  • Careful monitoring
  • Treatment determined by you and doctor

STAGE A PROGNOSIS

  • High blood pressure, diabetes
  • Coronary heart disease
  • Metabolic syndrome
  • History of cardiotoxic drug therapy
  • History of alcohol abuse, rheumatic fever, cardiomyopathy

STAGE B PROGNOSIS

  • Prior heart attack
  • Valve disease
  • Cardiomyopathy

STAGE C PROGNOSIS

  • Shortness of breath
  • Fatigue
  • Reduced ability to exercise

STAGE D PROGNOSIS

  • Systolic heart failure
  • Presence of advance symptoms

  • Roughly 670,000 people diagnosed each year.
  • leading cause of hospitalization in people older than 65.
