  • A chronic progressive disease
  • Heart inefficiently pumps blood throughout the body
  • More 200,000 US cases per year.
  • Affect men and women

CONTRIBUTING FACTORS TO CHF

  • Hypertension- a condition when the force of blood against an artery wall is too high.
  • Atherosclerosis- another name for high cholesterol. This condition affects the blood flow to the heart due to a build-up of plague in the arteries causing the arteries to narrow.
  • Angina- chest pain or discomfort caused when the heart is not getting enough oxygenated blood.

SYMPTOMS OF CHF

  • Fluid buildup in extremities causing edena
  • Shortness of breath due to excessive fluid in the lungs
  • Fatigue
  • Irregular heartbeat
  • Weight gain

DIAGNOSIS

  • Electrocardiogram
  • Echocardiogram
  • MRI
  • Stress test
  • Blood test

TREATMENT

  • Medication like ace inhibitors
  • Heart healthy diets
  • Monitoring weight daily
  • Become more physically active
  • Education
