FOUNDER

  • Master Kong

CONFUCIANISM

  • Doesn't contain all of the elements of some other religions
  • An ethical system to which rituals are important times during ones lifetime have been added

SYSTEMS

  • Ethical and philosophical system developed from the teachings of the Chinese philosopher
  • Philosophy originates in Spring and Autumn waring states eras
  • Following the Qin Dynasty, Confucianism became the dominant philosophical school of China

NO SPECIFIC LEADERSHIP

  • Social order, harmony, and good government should be based on family relationships
  • Young adult is served chicken on birthday
  • When someone dies the relatives cry out aloud to inform the neighbors

  • Opposite forces in the world working together - symbolized the social order and harmony that it stresse
  • To show how things are interconnected and independent in the world

EDUCATION

  • Important both to the welfare of the individual and to society
  • Based on the Confucianism 5 classes
  • Bases of education did not change through out the imperial history

CONFUCIAN TRADITION

  • The morning after the wedding the bride makes breakfast for the grooms parents
  • Marriage is performed in six stages
  • During a pregnancy the mother is given a specific diet
  • At death the relative cries out loud to inform the neighbors

  • The T'ai-shen protects the expectant woman and deals harshly with anyone who harasses the mother to be.
  • Mother receives special diet
  • Aloud to rest for the rest of the month

BELIEFS

  • Li: includes ritual, propriety, etiquette, etc.
  • Hsiao: love within the family: love of parents for their children and of children for their parents
  • Yi: righteousness
  • Xin: honesty and trustworthiness
  • Jen: benevolence, humaneness towards others; the highest Confucian virtue
