PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract

Math makes sense!

Concrete

  • Understanding manipulatives.
  • Students are introduced to an idea or a skill by acting it out with real objects.
Like:
-Base Ten Blocks
-Tiles
-Counters
-Fraction strips
-Number Lines
-Pattern Blocks
-Connecting cubes
One of the District "Must Haves" is the use of manipulatives.

Pictorial

  • Students learn to problem-solve by drawing pictures.
  • The pictures students draw represent the concrete objects students manipulated when problem-solving at the concrete level.
Like:
-Construction paper
-Erasable markers in tables or boards
-Math journal "Small group" tab
-Using grid paper (like the big roll)

Abstract

  • Abstract level requires students to do this with numbers and math symbols only.
  • Abstract understanding is often referred to as, "doing math in your head."
Like:
-Problem Solving
-Paper pencil
