Why was it necessary?
The a Compromise of 1850 was necessary because people were afraid of sectional imbalance over slave and free state admittance.

Also, it was necessary to decide the dispute on the boundary between New Mexico and Texas although this wasn't as big of an area of conflict.

The compromise admitted California as a free state, banned slave trade in Washington D.C., and made Texas lose the border dispute.

Also, however, slaveholding was permitted in Washington D.C., Texas gained 10 million, no slavery restrictions were set in the Utah or New Mexico territories, and a Fugitive Slave law was put in place.

Although this settled some disputes for the moment, it created deeper splits in the issue of slavery which led to the a Civil War and long term racial tension.
