COMPROMISES

Compromise
: a way of reaching agreement in which each person or group gives up something that was wanted in order to end an argument or dispute

THE GREAT COMPROMISE

Parties involved: DELEGATES from the Large States and Small States

LARGE STATES

In both houses of Congress, the states with more people should have more votes

SMALL STATES

In both houses of Congress, all states should have the same number of votes

GREAT COMPROMISE

  • Senate: equal number of votes for each state
  • House of Representatives: states with more people have more votes

THREE-FIFTHS COMPROMISE

Parties involved: DELEGATES from Southern and Northern states

NORTHERN DELAGATES

Did not believe enslaved people should be counted because they were not allowed to vote

SOUTHERN DELAGATES

Believed enslaved people should be counted even though they can't vote

THREE-FIFTHS COMPROMISE

  • Only three-fifths of a states enslaved people would be counted determining the number of representatives that state had in Congress.
