PRESENTATION OUTLINE

AMMONIA

NH^3

PHYSICAL PROPERTIES

  • Low boiling point
  • Low freezing point
  • Vaporization
  • Trigonal pyramidal shape
  • Colourless
  • Self-ionizes

CHEMICAL PROPERTIES

  • Not flammable
  • Reacts with bleach to form a toxic gas
  • Toxic when swallowed or mixed with bleach
  • Doesn't explode
  • Doesn't tarnish
  • Doesn't decompose

TYPE OF BONDING PRESENT

  • Hydrogen atoms can each form one covalent bond, and nitrogen atoms can each form three covalent bonds. Three pairs of electrons are shared in an ammonia molecule (NH3).

USES

  • Ammonia solutions are used to clean, bleach, and deodorize. The ammonia sold for household use is a dilute water solution of ammonia in which ammonium hydroxide is the active cleansing agent.
  • Ammonia solutions are used to etch aluminum.
  • Ammonia solutions also are used to saponify (hydolyze) oils and fats

ENERGY ASSOCIATED

  • Energy is released showing the molecule of hydrogen is more stable than ammonia
