How do we know if a child or a student has a learning disability?

First, types of learning disabilities:

• Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)
• Dyscalculia
• Dysgraphia
• Dyslexia
• Language Processing Disorder
• Visual Perceptual/Visual Motor Deficit
• ADHD
• Autism

How to Identify:

• First step - try to recognize the behaviors the student is displaying..
• This can help you determine if a child is internalizing or externalizing various behaviors
• Through various obervations..

Continued:

• Keeping track of test scores to monitor student progess
• Keeping track of classroom behaviors
• Review of previous records
• Review of family history
• Grade-Level testing

Once a learning disability is discovered - It is our job to act in the appropriate manner.

What comes next?

The Remedy:

• Create a better situation for the student(s).
• Talk with the student, experts, and the family to figure out the best way to deliver material to that student.
• Provide support towards the student's IEP
• Become familiar with the student's IEP and special needs.

Always continue to add support - and constantly monitor student for any sort of progress or decline.

The student should always stay in the least restrictive environment.
