"COMMON SENSE"

  • A pamphlet written by Thomas Paine in January of 1776
  • Addresses the problems of monarchy and advises separation from King George III and Parliament
  • Includes proposals for a new government in America
  • Ridiculed the fact that this large 'New World' was being ruled by such a small country

  • Talks about the feasibility of the American's winning a war of independence and concludes that with their population and resources it would be possible
  • About 500,000 copies were sold in only a few months (1/8 colonist owned it, sold more books than the bible, everyone was reading it)
  • Paine went as far as calling King George a "Royal Brute of England"
  • Was a major catalyst for the war
