PRESENTATION OUTLINE
FOUNDER(S)
Capatin John Smith claimed the land around the
Chesapeake Bay for England in 1608. King Charles I then gave the land to his friend. (Lord George Calvert)
Reasons for Being Founded
George Calvert had just converted to Catholic and wanted a place where people weren't persecuted for their religion. He though Maryland could be a place for people in search of religious freedom.
People in the Colony
Most settlers in the colony were white Europeans who tried to escape from religious persecution in their homelands. (Protestants, Jews, Quakers). The settlers usually brought their indentured servants and African slaves with them.
Climate and Geography
The winters were shorter and less harsh than the ones from England. The summers were long, hot, and humid, which was good for growing crops. The coastal plains were low and swampy.
Economy
Most of the settlers were farmers growing cotton, tobacco, indigo, and rice that they sold as cash crops. They were usually grown on plantations and these plantations were worked by slaves.
Religion
The colony was unique for its religious freedom. John Locke had created a charter for the colony that said that if seven or more people agreed on a certain religion, a church should be made and that no one should say abusive things to each other's religions.
Politics and Government
The colony was ruled by a system of laws made by John Locke and was called the Fundamental Constitution of Carolina. Overtime, the five colonies were able to control their government locally; They elected five representatives to serve with five agents. This council was ruled by a Parliament.
