PENNSYLVANIA

PARKER LUM PERIOD 2

FOUNDER

  • The Pennsylvania Colony was founded in English North America by William Penn.
  • The colony was established on March 4, 1681.
  • He was an English real estate entrepreneur, philosopher, and early Quaker.

REASONS

King Charles II of England had a large loan with Penn's father, after whose death, King Charles settled by granting Penn a large area west and south of New Jersey. He guaranteed free and fair trial by jury, freedom of religion, freedom from unjust imprisonment and free elections. Penn had hoped that Pennsylvania would be a profitable venture for himself and his family

SETTLERS

  • Before European settlement Pennsylvania was inhabited by many Indian tribes
  • The Native Americans were settled before Pennsylvania was founded
  • Before Pennsylvania was settled by Europeans,
  • the area was home to the Delaware.

GEOGRAPHY & CLIMATE
The land had mountains, coastal plain and plateau areas to Lake Erie lowlands. The general land of the area had very fertile soil. The climate was mild with warm summers and mild winters.

ECONOMY

  • The colonists exported agricultural products and natural resources.
  • Pennsylvania was referred to the breadbasket colony because of how many
  • crops they grew.
  • They were also to manufacture products such as plows, tools, kettles,
  • locks, nails and large blocks of iron which they exported to England.

RELIGION

  • Pennsylvania was not controlled by one specific religion.
  • There was complete freedom of religiom in the colony
  • There were mostly Quakers, Catholics, Lutherans, and Jews.
