MASSACHUSETTS

MATTHEW BACHOR, PERIOD 2

FOUNDERS

  • A group of Puritans in 1629 went out to settle and area north of Plymouth.
  • John Winthrop and the pilgrims founded the colony of Massachusetts.
  • This was the result of The Puritans landing in America.

REASONS FOUNDED

  • Success of the pilgrims encouraged Puritans to move to america.
  • Intentions of John Winthrop were "We shall be a city upon a hill. The eyes of all people are upon us."
  • Soon other followed the Puritans and by 1643 there was more than 20,000 Puritans in america

SETTLERS

  • The settlers in Massachusetts were mostly Puritans leaving from England to America.
  • The Puritans wanted to put their religious beleifs into practice so most of them came here.
  • Other people who did not agree with the Puritans were expelled and had to form other colonies.

CLIMATE & GEOGRAPHY

  • Colonists faced bitterly cold winters and mild summers.
  • At the coast land was flat but became hilly farther inland.
  • Soil was rocky and it was hard to farm.
  • Cold winters reduced the spread of disease.

ECONOMY

  • As the colony grew farmers started to work in feilds surrounding the towns
  • Farmers in the colony earned money by selling lots of crops
  • If one crop failed farmers could replace them with another type of crop

RELIGION

  • The Puritans made Protestant Congregationalist the colonies official religion.
  • Members of other religions would be expelled and have had to start their own colonies
  • Religion was one of the main reasons the Puritans moved to america.

POLITICS

  • The elected group ran the colony through General Court owned by the founding company
  • People voted for the governor and representatives for the general court
  • Only adult males who owned property and was a church member could vote
