CONNECTICUT

FOUNDER

  • Was claimed by dutch explorer, Adrian Block in 1614
  • It was also claimed by an englishman from Massachusetts, John Oldham in 1633
  • Thomas hooker, a puriten minister led his congregation to connecticut in June 1636
  • Thomas Hooker is genrally considered the founder of Connecticut

REASONS FOR BEING FOUNDER

  • Thomas hooker had to come to massachusetts, wasnt allowed to practice his puritan faith in native land
  • He was disturbed by lack of democracy
  • He then left colony for Connecticut to find even greater religious freedom

PEOPLE IN THE COLONY

  • Native Americans lived in the Quinnequktuqut when some white Europeans came to North America
  • In 1631 some native americans invited massachusstetts colony govenor to settle in their area
  • In exchanged they aksed for english protection
  • They then forced into slavery
  • Ducth and swedish also lived in connecticut

CLIMATE AND GEOGRAPHY

  • WInters in connecticut were colder then english winters
  • The summers were very mild
  • Soil was suitable for farming
  • Colonists along the coast used the sea for a living

ECONOMY

  • Colonies the food they needed for their colonies
  • Most common crops, corn, pumpkin, beans, squash, and apples
  • Cattle was raised for beed and milk
  • Shipbuilding, fishing were other ways to make a living

RELIGION

  • Most colonists came from puritan colonies so they followed the puritan religion
  • They made sure to seperate religious codes from colonial laws

POLITICS AND GOVERNMENT

  • Had the worlds first written consitution called fundimental orders
  • One representive from each town, 6 magistrates and 1 governor were all elected
  • It called for a governement based on the consent of the governed, radical idea for time
