Colonel Robert Shaw & the 54th Regiment

Robert Gould Shaw was born on Oct. 10, 1837.

His birthplace was boston, MA.

Robert Shaw was an only child.

His parents were Francis George and Sarah Blake. 

The Shaws were Unitarians.

Unitarians believed in One God, but not the Trinity.

His family  were abolitionists.

The family also was wealthy and well connected.

The Governor chose Shaw

to lead the 54th regiment of Massachusetts.

Shaw was only 26 years old

when offered to command the regiment.

The 54th regiment of Massachusetts was

the first black regiment.

The regiment was forced by Shaw's superiors to

participate in a destructive raid on the town of Darien, Georgia.

The regiment went to the battle at

Fort Wagner.

In that battle Robert Gould Shaw died in the charge

and half of the regiment was killed.

seargent William Harvey Carney served with gould.

He received the congressional medal of honor.

A monument to shaw and the 54th regiment

was unveiled on may 31, 1897.

The story of this unit

lives on in the movie Glory.

Gould is portrayed

by the actor Matthew Broderick.
