What is BULGHUR?

Bulghur, also know as bulgur and mistakenly called cracked wheat, is a food which originated in and around Babylon between 6000 and 4000 BCE. BULGHUR IS MADE BY COOKING WHEAT KERNELS, DRYING THEM THE CRACKING THEM AND DISPOSING OF THE OUTER SHELLS. It has a very high nutritious values, being high in vitamins. BULGHUR is used in dishes such as salads and Syrian dishes like tabooli after having been soaked, usually over night. BULGHUR can add a nutty taste to a dish and also be used to fill you up.

What are the current issues surrounding BULGHUR?

BULGHUR, as explained, is made from wheat. Wheat is and has been constantly surrounded by issues involving feeding masses of people. Over the centuries wheat has been genetically altered as well as naturally evolved to produce large amounts of grain in small amounts of time. Because of the genetic alterations, however, the wheat we consume today has very little nutritional value and some argue is an extremely unhealthy addition to any diet.

What is the history of Bulghur?

BULGHUR has been around since the Babylonians, who first created it some time between 6000 and 4000 BCE, depending on who is being sourced. The process with which the wheat is turned into Bulghur has remained the same over the years differing only in that we no long dry our wheat on our roofs and instead of spend days making our own, are able to purchase it In Stores. The coarseness of Bulghur has also changed. Today people can choose between course, medium, and fine which changes the cooking time and taste of the food.

What role does it play in the economy?

Wheat has a huge impact on the economy. by producing food from cheap wheat companies can sell large amounts of low priced foods and still make money off of them. This helps the economy by putting more money in the pockets of people who would usually be spending the majority of their money on food.

Can Bulghur be tied to the columbian exchange?

Yes. Of course bulghur can be tied to it. Bulghur was around and a prominent food of Eastern Europe during that time frame. Long voyages by ship usually held a store of Bulghur which a small amount of will go a long ways once cooked into a meal. Also because it is so cheap it was easy for the shippers to get large amount for their sailing.

The environmental impact of my diet is drastically reduced because my choice to consume locally grown or raised foods. Because of this, our food is not shipped in, reducing the pollution created by ships and trucks. My family also tends to lean away from processed foods and towards natural foods both to improve our diet and to reduce the impact it has on the environment.

Meatloaf to power
The meatloaf which I had for my dinner was made from locally raised beef. This beef was raised by dr. Steven cox on his farm off toms creek road. The manure from his cows is collected and used to create methane gas which his company, gkw energy, inc., converts into electricity, making my meals helpful to my environment.
