Facts about Colleigate Substance Abuse

  • Colleges are now experiencing more substance abuse than ever before
  • Approximately 21% of young adults meet criteria for substance abuse disorder (SAMSHA, 2013)
  • In 2013 the rate of illicit drug use was 22.3% among full time college students age 18 to 22 (SAMSHA, 2013)

Collegiate Recovery

  • Students have found that it can be hard to overcome perceptions and stigma on campuses, causing students to be afraid to ask for help
  • 37% of college students fear seeking help because of social stigma (Holleran Steiker, Grahovac, & White, 2014)

Collegiate Recovery Performance

  • In a response to the high rates of substance abuse on campuses Collegiate Recovery Programs are now being integrated onto campuses across the nation
  • These programs add a safe place for students to engage in recovery and find fellowship on campus

Association of Recovery in Higher Education

  • ARHE is an association that exclusively works with CRPs and CRCs.
  • ARHE aims to helping students through engaging the community and colleges in the recovery process
  • ARHE also helps with networking institutional CRP's with various partners such as sponsors

Collegiate Recovery Performance

  • An interesting trend is developing that people find themselves performing at the highest levels academically when engaged in a Collegiate Recovery Program
  • Grades are usually pretty low when a student dealing with substance abuse is not in recovery

Collegiate Recovery Performance

  • When a student enters recovery their is usually a marked increase in academic achievement
  • Due to CRP's being absitence based, the students have eliminated alcohol, marijuana, and any other drugs from their lifestyle which contributes to their academic excellence
