Cold war

The cold war began in 1947 and ended in 1988.

The Cold War was the geopolitical, ideological, and economic struggle between two world superpowers, the USA and the USSR.

In 1945, the United States and Soviet Union were allies, jointly triumphant in World War II, which ended with total victory for Soviet and American forces over Adolf Hitler's Nazi empire in Europe.

Causes of the Cold War

  • USSR supports communism while USA supports democracy.
  • Both countries are afraid of each other
  • America didn't agree with the soviets part with Germany during the holocaust.
  • Soviets feared our atomic weapons.

Effects of the Cold War

  • U.S. and the USSR created atomic bombs and other nuclear weapons.
  • Vietnam and Korean war
  • Soviet union collapsed due to economic weakness.
  • America became a "go to" country, if needed.
  • communism collapsed.

When Mikhail Gorbachev assumed the reins of power in the Soviet Union in 1985, no one predicted the revolution he would bring. A dedicated reformer, Gorbachev introduced the policies of glasnost and perestroika to the USSR.
