PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE OTHER SIDE OF AMERICAN LIFE

Many races were still struggling for civil rights, and some of them
like African Americans stood up for themselves in 1950s. There were
also problems like poverty, Decline of the inner city, and juvenile
delinquency. Teens at that time struggled because the older generation
did not accept their new culture.

POVERTY

  • With WWII two at the end it started a Cold War between nations and built more poverty in US
  • 20% of the nation was poor (one of every five American)
  • Many programs and emerged to battle the poverty of America
  • The poverty increased in the northern part of the United States.
  • Poverty mainly affected the adults and also children

Decline of the Inner city
There was one main reason why the inner cities declined. This was the rise of the suburbs. As the suburbs arose, the cities declined.

Before World War II, there were few suburbs and everyone lived in the cities. They were also composed, in many places, of African Americans and whites.
After World War II, this started to change. For various reasons, suburbs started to boom. However, the people who moved to the suburbs were typically middle-class or better and were typically white.

African American
After World War Two, there was still segregation. For the African
Americans, the struggle to have integration first happened with
case of Brown versus the Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas.
The Brown family argued that their daughter should not have to ride a bus to a far away school. This led the courts to rule that segregation was not equal or constitutional. Martin Luther King Jr. helped organize the bus boycott, and he became the spokesperson for the Civil Rights Movement.

Hispanics
For Hispanics, there was a big increase in immigration, with many
Mexicans coming into the United States illegally and working as
migrant farm workers. There was discrimination against them, and
there was even a big deportation of 3.8 million workers who didn't
have documentation to be in the states legally. In 1959, the Cuban
Revolution occurred, and in 1950 Puerto Rico became part of the United States. Both of these events greatly increased the number of Hispanics in the United States.

Native American
The red scare and the spread of nuclear weapons had a profound impact on life in the 1950s. fear of communism and of nuclear war dominated life For ordinary Americans as well as for government leaders the era.

Appalachia

The area of the Appalachia Mountains suffered from extreme poverty
during the 1950s. Because of the lack of economic opportunity,
millions moved out of that area. The area had few jobs, most of which
were in the coal mines and were low paying and dangerous.

Juvenile delinquency

The juvenile delinquents in the 1950s were seen as rebels. They were
breaking rules like wearing jeans to school or listening to rock n
roll music. The parents worried that their teenagers would be wild or
disrespectful.
