Piaget's Theory

  • Children are naturally curious, motivated learners
  • Children learn from experience
  • Children adapt to environment through assimilation & accommodation
assimilation – fitting new information into current scheme
accommodation – revising or abandoning scheme to account for new information

Piaget's Theory (Cont'd)

  • Interaction with environment and people are critical
  • Equilibration leads to increasingly complex thought
  • Children think in qualitatively different ways at different stages
Equilibration leads to increasingly complex thought
disequilibrium results from mismatch between schemes and information
equilibrium is the goal state, result of reorganizing or replacing schemes

Piaget's Stage Theory

Stages of Cognitive Development

  • Sensorimotor Stage (Birth- 2)
  • Preoperational Stage (2-6)
  • Concrete Operations (6-11)
  • Formal Operations (11 +)

Vygotsky's Theory

  • Social and cultural environment play vital role in children's cognitive development
  • Language (both self talk/private speech and inner speech) is essential for thinking
  • Children learn best by guided practice led by more experienced adults
  • Zone of proximal development (ZPD) and scaffolding

Piaget vs. Vygotsky

Group Activity 1

  • Use the venn diagram to compare and contrast how Piaget's and Vygotsky's theory similar and different

Group Activity 2: Applications

  • Each group will have a classroom scenario. As a group, please decide whether the scenario applies Piaget's theory or Vygotsky's theory. Explain your rationale.
