Coaching & Confidentiality

What You Can Expect
There have been some questions about confidentiality and what agreements exist at our school about coaching and confidentiality. In this presentation, I'll share with you the existing agreements about confidentiality and what you can expect when you work with me as your coach.

Coaching is a confidential process where we work together to improve student learning.

There are very clear agreements in our school about confidentiality. Admin and myself both believe that coaching is most successful when the process is confidential. That way teachers can feel comfortable working on their stickiest concerns with a coach.

What will not be shared about coaching

  • What teachers are involved in coaching
  • Any specifics, positive or negative, about any teacher
I will never share what teachers are involved in coaching. I also won't share any specifics about any teachers, positive or negative. My hope is that everyone is involved in coaching and we're an open, collaborative culture, but I understand that it can be intimidating to participate in coaching. I want you to feel confident that what we discuss won't be shared.

Notice any trends?
Specifics stay confidential

The specifics of who I work with and what we discuss always stay confidential.

Coaching confidentiality applies with everyone, teachers and admin.

Confidentiality applies to everyone. I won't share any information with an administrator or any other teacher without your permission.

You're always welcome to share your coaching experiences but I won't.

However, you're always welcome to share with anyone you'd like about what we're working on. I hope that coaching goes so well that you want to share how it went and your successes. But that's always your decision, not mine.

What can be shared about coaching

  • % of teachers involved in coaching
  • # of teacher contacts
  • # of participants at optional PD
  • # of coaching cycles
  • School trends
So that I can demonstrate how coaching is going in our school, I do share some information with admin. I tell them the % of teachers who are involved in coaching, how many coaching cycles I'm involved in, the # of teacher contacts I have, and general school trends on what we're working on.

Notice any trends?
Only #'s and data

But that data is always limited to numbers and general trends. There aren't any specifics about any teacher.

The only exception would be if a student is in danger.

The ONLY exception would be if I felt that students were in immediate danger. If I saw something that I felt warranted breaking confidentiality, I'd let you know first and then let someone in charge know. It's just like the relationship we have with students. We can keep things confidential as long as the student is safe but, if they're not, then someone else needs to know.

Questions?

Please let me know. Confidentiality is important to me.
Please hold me accountable for confidentiality. I work very hard to maintain confidentiality standards. If you ever feel that I've broken your trust, please let me know so that we can talk about it.
