LOW CLOUDS

Low level clouds at heights of 0-2 km

STRATOCUMULUS

  • Stratocumulus clouds are identified by cloud placies
  • Rollers
  • Banks
  • Or compound dark grey layer cloud
  • Stratocumulus during winter indicate high pressure and stable winter weather.

STRATUS

  • Causes fog
  • Produces overcast weather
  • Associated with mist

STRATOCUMULUS LENTICULARIS

  • Is identified by large dark rounded masses
  • Appear as lines or waves
  • Weather produced are light rain
  • Snow

MEDIUM CLOUD FAMILY

Medium level clouds at heights of 2-7 km

ALTOCUMULUS

  • Grey cloud bundles
  • Altocumulus clouds that appear on a clear humid morning can indicate a thunderstorm
  • Sometimes appear in patches

ALTOSTRATUS

  • Dense thick layered cloud
  • Gray
  • Rain cloud
  • Belongs to the stratiform physical category

NIMBOSTRATUS

  • Has a vertical and horizontal extent
  • Nimbo is latin from nimbus which denotes precipitation
  • Rain cloud

HIGH LEVEL CLOUDS

High level clouds at heights of 5-13 km

CIRRUS

  • Appear threadlike
  • Also appear like ice crystals
  • Fair to pleasant weather

CIRROSTRATUS

  • Sometimes causes halo apperances
  • Will bring fair weather unless darker then they will precipitate
  • Referred to as a cirriform cloud

  • Predicts severe weather (thunderstorms)
  • Referred to as cirriform cloud
  • Tropospheric cloud

MULTI LEVEL CLOUDS

CUMULONIMBUS

  • Expands all three levels
  • Capable of producing lightning and other severe weather
  • Form alone or in clusters or along cold fronts
