the steps to putting on a dress step

  • first can you imagine waking up and not just throwing on a pair of jeans? 
  • in the Elizabethan era you had 12 steps to putting on a dress

step 1.

  • you put on your smock
  • this was a protection layer for your other layers
  • this layer protects the layers from oils and sweat
  • this was the dirtiest layer of clothes

step 2.

  • next, stockings and tights 
  • these go under your dress to protect your legs from under wire

step 3.

  • corset this goes around the waist and fits tightly 
  • this makes you thinner 
  • it also damaged a lot of vital organs
  • but you know beauty is pain!

step 4.

  • next was the hoop skirt 
  • This gives your skirt volume
  • the richer you were the bigger your skirt was

  • Bum roll 
  • these are to make your ''bum'' bigger under the dress
  • the richer people wore them poor people couldn't afford them

  • next is the petticoat you put it over your hoop skirt
  • this is the pretty part that has the pattern on it

  • kirtle and fore part
  • fore part is the middle of the skirt
  • the kirtle is the part that goes over the corset

step 8.

  • the Partlet is a thing that looks like a bib 
  • it usually has jewels on it 

step 9.

  • gown and  sleeves
  • the gown goes over the partlet to make it a french gown
  • the sleeves go over your smock there big and puffy

step 10.

  • next was shoes one of the last steps 
  • shoes were usually not very long lasting 
  • they had thin leather soles they usaully got holes

  • head wear usually consists of hair and hats
  • the richer you were the bigger your hair was

  • Makeup is the last step 
  • You painted your face white and your lips red.
  • The richer you were the paler you were!

corset facts

  • there are 2 known corsets left from the 16th century
  • instead of clothes conforming to your body 
  • your body conformed to clothes 
  • corsets often damaged internal organs 

fainting couches

  • ''fainting couches were created after corsets came into fashion
  • they had them because of the lack of air'' ~willow schaefer
