a Breath Of Fresh AIR

climate change

  • Is a gradual increase in the overall temperature in the Earth's atmosphere generally attributed to the greenhouse effect
  • The greenhouse effect happens when certain gases, known as geenhouse gases collect in the earth's atmosphere

Climate change

  • (caused by) these gases can occur naturally in the atmoshpere including carbon, dioxide, methane, nitrogen dioxide, and flourinated gases known as Cholorofluorocarbons

climate change

  • since the industrial revolution in the early 1700s late 1800s people have been releasing large quzntities of greenhouse gases into the atmoshpere

causes of climate change/habitat damage

  • agriculture
  • land conversion for development
  • water development
  • pollution
  • greenhouse gases

Effects of climate change

  • tHE MOST OBVIOUS EFFECT IS THAT GLACIERS AND ICE CAPS MELT FASTER THAN USUAL
  • the MELT WATER DRAINS INTO THE OCEAN CAUSING SEA LEVELS TO RISE AND OCEANS TO BECOME LESS SALTY
  • patterns in precipitation( rain and snow) may change or become more extreme
  • the speed at which global warming is taking place is unprecedented; so all the effects are unknown

examples of climate change

  • warmer springs have led to earlier nesting for 28 migratory birds species on the east coast of the us
  • Northeastern birds that winter in the southern us are returning north in the spring 13 days earlier than they did in the 20th century
  • (in a california study) 16 out of 23 butterfly species shifted their migration timing and arrived earlier

food web disruptions

  • The impact of climate change on a specific species can ripple through a food web and affect a wide range of other organsims
  • EX. Declines in the duration and extent of sea ice in the artic leads to declines in the abundance of ice algae, which thrive in nutrient-rich pockets in the ice
  • Those algae are eaten by zoo-plankton, which are eaten by Arctic cod, an important food source for many marine mammals like seal. and seals are eaten by polar bears
  • hence, declines in ice algae can lead to declines in polar bear populations
