Early Life

  • Born Nov. 14, 1840 in Paris, France
  • Did not like being in a classroom
  • Developed live of drawing at an early stage
  • Unlike his father, his mother supported him

EARLY ART BEGINNINGS

  • Moved to Paris to study art in 1859
  • Influenced by landscape artist, Johann Jongking
  • Accepted to art show in Paris
  • Still struggled financially, even with critical praise

STRUGGLES

  • Struggled with depression and financial instability
  • Suicide attempt in 1868
  • Destroyed an estimated 500 of his own works
  • At times filled with self-doubt
  • Despite this and being almost blind, he painted beautiful works.

  • "Le Bassin aux nympheas" was sold for $71 million
  • "Effects of Sun in the Fog" was sold for $20.1 million
  • Even if many years have passed, his work still lives on.
