Respect

Respect: Be professional; expect it of yourself and of others.

Be respectful of other students, especially when they are presenting.

Validity

Validity: This section refers to the timeliness of the information

How current is the information you are using?

Or, put another way; is the information you are using up-to-date?

As part of the Code of Federal Regulations (CFRs), the chart and publications must be “currently corrected” and of the “correct edition” of the area to be transited.

Reference: 33 CFR 164.33 Charts and publications

Offical or Unoffical?

Official or unofficial sources: The importance of determining the source of the information

You will need to determine the implications of using both official and unofficial sources of information.

Who is the authority providing the information?

For examples: CFRs, NVICs, NTMs, LNMs, and charts/publications.

Accuracy

Accuracy: The reliability of information

As future navigational officer, you are required to evaluate both data and information.

Occasionally there may be differences between sources of information, how will you respond?

How does the information used apply to the visual and electronic navigation?

Are there capability and limitation considerations with regards to electronic navigational aids?

Relevance

Relevance: The importance of determining if the information meets your needs

Critically evaluate the information you use.

Be careful of information overload, know what information to use and when.

When in doubt, ask for help i.e.; call the Captain per the standing orders.

Balance

Balance

There may be times when the information is useful to you and not to others.

There will also be times when the opposite applies.

The shift to the greater use of electronic charts and publications can increase efficiency but at what expense?

Questions?

Questions

Some of these expectations may differ from what you expect during a normal lecture class.

We now know what the expectations are during in-class activities, are there any questions?
