Classification: system that groups organisms based on commom features they share
We classify to study diversity of life and group organisms in a logical manner
binomial nomenclature: 2 name naming system, scientific notation
reasons why we use bionomial nomenclature
- all organisms are given a universal name
binomial nomenclature written in scientific names: genus name (capital) followed by species name(lower case)
how we classify organisms
- we use linnaeus's system but add comparison of features
How many taxons are there?
Acronym for taxon: Did King Phillip Come Over For Some Grape Soda?
Names of taxons: Domain, Kingdom, Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus, Species
The broadest level of classification: Many different organisms fit into the category
Most specific level of classification: more exclusive, fewer can fit into it
Six kingdoms: eubacteria, archaebacteria, protista, fungi, plantae, and animalia
