CLASS SYSTEM IN VICTORIAN ENGLAND

BY: GRAYCEN, KAYLEA, CLAIRE, ALYSSA, AND SHELBY

Social classes are distinct social groupings which formed British Society.

CLASS STRUCTURE

  • The class structure was depended on the source of their income.
  • Class was revealed through power, authority, wealth, religion, and education.
  • Also, working and living conditions, lifestyles, lifespan, and culture.
  • You could not socialize with someone from a higher class without being introduced.

DIFFERENT TYPES OF SOCIAL CLASSES

  • There were three different levels of the social class system.
  • They were working class, middle class, and upper class.

WORKING CLASS

  • It consisted of men and women who performed physical labor.
  • These men and women were paid daily or had weekly wages.
  • The working conditions were poor and unsanitary.
  • They do not follow the rules of courtship or participate in social entertainment.
  • It consisted of men, women, and children.

WORKING CLASS

  • This class lived in over crowded, poorly ventilated areas.
  • These houses had no sewage or drainage systems.
  • The jobs included working in mills and factories.
  • The working class had a low chance of education.

MIDDLE CLASS

  • The middle class was known as the intelligent artisan.
  • This class only consisted of men, who provided the income.
  • The men performed mental and clean work.
  • Their were paid monthly or annually.
  • The jobs included; bankers, shop keepers, merchants, and engineers.

UPPER CLASS

  • They did not work.
  • The income came from inherited land and investments.
  • This class spent most of their time going to social events.
  • It included people from the church and of nobility.
