  • Born in Leipzig, Germany
  • When she was older she lived in Dresden from 1844 to 1850, and in Berlin from 1857 to 1863

  • She is one of the very few female composers from the 1800s that most musicians have heard of

  • Robert Schumann was Clara’s husband
  • He was known for piano music, songs, and orchestral music
  • He died on July 29,1856

  • Her mother was Marianne Wieck
  • She died on March10,1872
  • She was a pianist, singer, and a piano teacher

ABOUT HER FATHER

  • Her father was Friedrich Wieck
  • He died on August 27,1921
  • He was a pianist and a teacher
  • He was opposed to Clara marrying Robert

HER PARENTS’ DIVORCE

  • Clara’s father Friedrich was an abusive music teacher and a piano store owner. Her mother Mariane was a singer. Mariane ended up falling in love with a friend of Friedrich’s. When Clara was six, her parents got divorced. Following the divorce, Mariane was forced to give up custody of Clara.

  • Friedrich did not want Clara to marry Robert because he thought it would destroy the plans he had for Clara’s music career
  • He tried to stop the union in as many ways as he could
  • Then he threatened to shoot Robert
