  • The emancipation proclamation main factor
  • is that all slaves in The North and in few
  • rebelling territories were freed.

CIVIL WAR

TIMELINE -

1861- FORT SUMTER

  • Fort Sumter, a federal fort in
  • Charleston Harbor, was fired
  • upon by rebel forces to begin
  • the Civil War
  • -April 1861-

1862- BATTLE OF ANTIETAM

  • The very first battle of the Civil War to take place
  • on North soil, (Sharpsburg, Maryland) in which
  • it was the bloodiest 1 day battle in American History
  • The Union had victory while Lee withdrew to Virgina
  • -September 1862-

1862-1863 EMANCIPATION PROCLAMATION

  • This changes the nature of the war since
  • the Northern and rebelling territories
  • slaves were freed
  • -Announced in September 1862-
  • -Signed in January 1863-

1863- SIEGE OF VICKSBURG

  • The North captured this stronghold
  • to gain control of the Mississippi River
  • and divided the Southern States
  • -May to July 1863-

1863- BATTLE OF GETTYSBURG

  • The turning point of the Civil
  • War;Lee's invasion of northern
  • territory is repelled;South is no
  • longer capable of an offensive into Union
  • -July 1863-

1865- LEE SURRENDERS

  • Lee surrenders at Appomattox Court
  • House - brings civil war to a close as
  • the Confederate forces surrender.
  • Now these states can back to the US
  • -April 1865-
