TITLE- IN THE TRENCHES

Cannons and rifles fired while my ears went deaf,
The smell of bodies and smoke covered the fields,
I heard gunshots, and shortly after saw my friends fall,
I hoped to god I would make it out,

Everyone was filled with fear knowing they could die at any moment,
You couldn't see anything coming, just hope for the best,
Soldiers had lips blackened from cartridges of ammunition,
I saw faces I had known, scattered, bloodied and dying,

Soldiers, blue and grey, stabbed with bayonets,
Blood, poisoning these beautiful lands,
The townspeople didn't deserve this,
As all the perishing soldiers fell into an abyss of bodies,

We wanted to defeat the enemy more than anything,
I saw men young and old shooting back and forth,
As the sweet taste of victory was approaching,
Were the thousands of lost sons, brothers, and fathers worth it?
